Chapter One

The morning of Gongjin village was pleasant as always, the soft hue of yellow in the sky was indicting the early rays of the sun which was trying to penetrate its way through the thick cloud of rainy days, the chirping of birds mixed with sounds of few vehicles accompanied the air like an old friend.

The Kim family were up even before the sun and the birds, their whole house was buzzing with excitement as every person moved from one place to another doing their work, organising every single thing perfectly.

Kim Sumin was in the kitchen along with his daughter Yuri and daughter-in-law Soyeon, cooking breakfast for her son who is returning home after almost ten years. Kim Taehyung, the youngest son of the Kim family is supposed to come home around breakfast time.

Everyone in the house is just wanting to get done with the work and the time to move fast, so they can have their son back in their arms, while one person is lazily shifting from one side of the bed to another.

Kim Hyejin, Jungkook’s mother came down the stairs and saw Sumin working in the kitchen, “Ohh you could have called me eounni..” she said and entered the kitchen. “That’s fine, Hyejin-ah, I am almost done, you were also busy so..” Sumin smiled and looked towards both girls who were currently busy chopping off some vegetables.

“Go and chop them outside, you are taking a lot of space here,” Sumin said, her scent spiked up teasingly, “She is calling you fat Yuri-ah..” Soyeon laughed and went out before Yuri could do something.

Their house wasn’t that big, the two storey house consists of just three rooms along with kitchen and a living room on the ground where one room was of Kim Nayoung, the eldest of the family, and other two were of Taehyung’s parents and Jungkook’s parents.

The first floor has three rooms along with an open area, one room is used by Taehyung’s elder brother and his wife Soyeon and two of the extra rooms were used by Jungkook and his sister, Yejin and cousin Yuri when she visited here from her in-laws house.

Jimin generally slept in the hut in their fields, to look over the crops. Or if he is at home then Jungkook has to sleep outside in the open. He is not comfortable sharing a room with her sister, even if it's just for a day or two.

“Where is Jungkook?” Sumin asked, taking out the freshly baked bread, Hyejin looked at her, and gave a nervous smile, “He just woke up, he will be here in a minute.” Hyejin replied, turning the other way.

“Well don’t mind me Hyejin-ah but you should teach him some manners, I mean waking up this late is not really a good behaviour anyone would want in their omega.” Sumin taunted, “He was awake till late last night, that’s why.” Hyejin defended her son, voice a little lower not wanting to offend her.

“What was he doing?” she asked closing the lid of some spice boxes and went out of the kitchen to take the vegetables if they are chopped, Hyejin just looked at her disappearing back and sighed, she hates it how all family like to dictate just her children how to live or how to behave. She shook her head and focused on the dishes she was preparing.

The sunlight filtered through the open window of the omega’s bedroom falling directly on his legs, yes legs, because he was sleeping upside down on the bed to avoid early morning rays disturbing his sleep.

He can close the windows as well but he likes the cool air in the night which helps him sleep faster. Sumin always scolded him for it, always saying to close the windows during rainy days as it wets the whole room and sometimes the floor creaks because of the wetness.

The room paint was chipped at many places leaving the cement thoroughly visible, Jungkook asked many times to paint the room but his uncle denied saying that they are low on budget and Jungkook would always roll his eyes, lie.

Jungkook knows that they were lying about money, all the money from the crops, rents and even the fields they have given to people earns a fortune and just because his father is bed ridden for almost eight years, it is all managed by Taehyung’s father alone with the help of his own son’s, all the money goes to his pocket and he runs the household on it because his grandmother is too old to keep check on all that herself. He always volunteered to work along with them but they always refused because of just his second gender.

And let’s not forget the money Taehyung has sent every month for the last four years, even though they pretend that there’s no money Jungkook knows better. The knock on his door pulled him harshly out of his dreams as he groaned turning on the other side of the bed.

“Jungkook..” he heard his name being called and sat on the bed yawning, the knocking were turned into banging now, he looked at the brown coloured door and was immediately on his feet because if the knock kept going that way the poor excuse of doorknob will give up before its final time.

He opened the door and looked at his mother with bored expression and turned around going inside the room again, his mother came inside and gasped, Jungkook frowned and looked back only to widen his eyes when he saw his mother moving towards the mess of books and notes on the floor mat.

“Jungkook what’s all this—” his mother turned towards him, while Jungkook already was on his toes collecting everything from the mat, “You know your halmeoni and abeoji get angry if they get to know, jungkook I am talking to you..” Hyejin said, turning around and closing the door, Jungkook rolled his eyes and looked at his mother, “And who's gonna tell them? You? Oh come on eomma, you love me too much to do that.” Jungkook teased his mother.

“Jungkook, it's no matter to joke about, you know how they are and how they approach the topics of omega studying and all!” Hyejin panicked voice made Jungkook sigh, “Eomma please, not you too. I don’t care what they think,” Jungkook said, closing the small almirah after keeping his possession safely in it.

“Where did you even get the money to buy all that?” She asked, holding his arm, Jungkook's shoulder slumped, “They are not mine, some are Hoseok’s and some I got from the village library.” Jungkook replied, trying to shut out the topic, but this sentence made Hyejin panic to rise again, “You are still in touch with Hoseok? Even after all that happened?” Hyejin asked, voice raising in anger.

“Eomma, Hoseok was innocent, it was a mistake, a mistake of the eye, please, don’t you believe me?” he asked, feeling frustration bubble up in his blood, “I do, kookie, my baby, I do. But the—”

“I don’t care eomma, please eomma, let’s go I am hungry come on.” he said and turned around going out of the room and waited for his mother to come out as well so he could lock the door.

His mother looked at her son’s back while he locked the door. He turned around and flinched, seeing her still there. She kept her palm on his cheek which he held with his own, “I just don’t want you to get in trouble baby.” she whispered,

“I will not eomma, trust me. I will be careful, I just want to do something for you and appa,” he muttered, “You being here is enough baby.” His mother assured him to which he gave her a beautiful bunny smile, “You go, I am coming after freshening up.” Jungkook said, she nodded her head and went downstairs.

Jungkook skipped his steps on the stairs, hopping on the ground with a hush sound, making both women in the dining room—setting cutleries—stare at him, “Hmm, finally morning Jungkook?” Soyeon teased, Jungkook chuckled and made his way towards them, “Yuri noona, ohh you are here already!” he teased, taking one of the duster and started cleaning with them,

“Hmm, I don’t sleep till the sun is up, you know.” Yuri rolled her eyes, Jungkook laughed and pointed a spoon at her, “Just say you miss sleeping this late, noona, no need to pretend.” He laughed giving a high five to Soyeon, who laughed along making Yuri grumble as she kept the duster back on the table and went away saying something like she has much more work to do.

Silence over them as they focused on the task on the hand, Jungkook helping her trying to blend in the background to skip scolding from his eomeoni and halmeoni, he looked at Soyeon who seemed busy in her own thoughts and leaned forward, he hesitated, “Noona,” he whispered, Soyeon looked at him, “Did she come alone?” he asked, there was an edge to his voice, Soyeon nodded her head, “Jihoon oppa will be coming in the evening.” she added, making Jungkook nod his head and focus back to his work.

Kim Sumin was setting the table for breakfast when the front door opened, she smiled making her way towards the door only to frown seeing only her husband and her elder son,”Where is Taehyung? She asked, peeking out of the door,

Taejoon sighed, taking his robes off, “His ship is 3 hours late.” he replied and sat on the sofa while Soyeon poured a glass of water for him, “Ohh why?” she whined. “How would I know?” He rolled his eyes “But—” “Enough..” Taejoon stated and went towards his room.

“Serve breakfast, I am coming.” Seokjin said, making Soyeon nod her head and quickly made her way towards the kitchen followed by Sumin.

“Jungkook.” Sumin snapped, seeing him taking a mochi out of the container, he turned around quickly, “Yes eomeoni,” he asked hiding his hand behind his back.

Sumin went towards him and took the mochi out of his hand, “What’s this?” she asked, glaring at him, one thing Sumin hates is taking something from the kitchen without her permission, especially something she made.

“I just wanted—”

“I made this for my son, why did you take it without asking me? You always do that,” Sumin scolded him. She went towards the pot and secured it tightly before placing it on the top shelf.

“Come on eomeoni, it was just one, you have made plenty for Taehyung hyung. Give me one.” Jungkook said, trailing behind her who just glared at him. “No..” she said, “My Taehyungie will eat it first then someone else,” Sumin stated.

Jungkook sighed and looked at Soyeon who was asking him to not pester her anymore, he nodded his head and looked back at Sumin, “Fine but after Taehyung hyung tastes them, I will also have some.” he said, Sumin turned towards him and nodded, “yeah then you can have as much as you want, now go and ask your mother to come here.” she said and Jungkook nodded his head and went out.

He knocked at his parent’s door and entered, he smiled seeing his father looking at him, “How are you appa.” he asked, tucking the side of his blankets carefully around him, Jaehyung eyes twinkled slightly as if saying he is all good.

“Where is eomma?” He asked and went towards the bathroom to check it, she was not there, he came beside his father whose eyes were just staring blankly at the ceiling.

“Did you have your morning medicines?” he asked, opening the medicine box of his father. “Sorry I slept a little too late today, but I think Eunji was here, hmm… you had your medicine, very good.” Jungkook talked to his father, who is in no condition to talk or move but the doctor said that he can hear them.

His father was involved in an explosion, which happened around eight years back, the impact crushed his delicate nerves at the base of his brain, he survived but his body didn’t, doctor now called it LIS (Locked-In Syndrome), where a person can hear, can see but cannot move or speak.

Many doctors give up on him, saying that he is going to live like this all his remaining life, alive on medicines.

Just then his mother came inside, and the sudden spike in scent told them that Jaehyung is quite happy to have his wife near him, Jungkook laughed turning towards his mother, “Hmmm someone is happy,” he teased and decided to leave them alone.

He went back to the kitchen and helped Sumin himself, telling his mother is busy feeding his father. Sumin didn’t say anything and just sat on the dining table along with everyone.

Hyejin came back after some time and joined them at the table. Jungkook focused on his food, noticing the absence of his sister at the table.

He had just taken a bite when his grandmother spoke up, “Jungkook-ah..” she called, “Yes, halmeoni..” Jungkook replied, looking at her.

“I forgot to tell you yesterday, move out of your room and settle in with your sister.” she stated, taking a bite from her bowl, while Jungkook’s chopsticks stopped halfway.

“Huh? Why?” he asked, looking around the table he matched eyes with his mother, who didn’t say anything and just kept looking at him.

“What why? Taehyungie is coming, where do you think he will sleep?” Nayoung taunted, Jungkook gripped the chopsticks a little tight, “But the other room on the upstairs is not occupied, he can have that one.” Jungkook proposed.

“But it’s small and he will have problems in there, and moreover Taehyung used to have that room when he was here, I just allowed you to take that till he is gone.” Sumin interrupted in between, Jungkook wanted to say something but his mother pinched his thighs from under the table.

“It's okay eounni, he will move out.” She said hurriedly not wanting to ruin the mood of others, Jungkook looked at his halmeoni, “Okay, then I will just take the other room.” he said,

“No..” Yuri suddenly said, “That’s my room.” she stated, ‘It was.. Noona.. Now you don’t live here. I will take the room when you go back, don’t worry” Jungkook pointed out, “So what? That’s still mine, I don’t like people using my things, you know that appa right.” she turned towards her father who was quietly eating.

He looked up, his eyes moving between Jungkook and Yuri, “It’s okay yuri-ah, he is right you don’t live here, and where will he sleep, he can always share his room with his sister when you will be here.” He stated, leaving no room for argument. Jungkook smiled triumphantly and continued eating.

“But—”

The knock on the door made their conversation halt and all their heads turned towards the door, Jungkook's face broke into a beautiful smile mirroring the person standing at the door.
